Unique jewellery pieces from Melt Originals
Working with crystalline glazes ensures each piece of porcelain jewellery Melissa Prendergast produces under her brand, Melt Originals, is unique.
Although she can replicate colours, Prendergast says she can never predict the pattern the crystals will form when fired in the kiln.
“It’s so exciting; it’s just like Christmas every time I open the kiln. The hardest part is waiting several hours for the big reveal, which is needed for the kiln to cool down.”
Prendergast began her career as a ceramic artist over 20 years ago. She was originally focused on creating pieces thrown on a potter’s wheel but has since turned her attention to jewellery.
“I just love the fact that jewellery is something that can actually be worn,” she says. “I like creating pieces that can be used.
“Being able to create something that is brand new from scratch is extremely satisfying. I love seeing people who are intrigued by the patterns that the crystals form.”
The uniqueness of Melt’s necklaces, earrings and bracelets make them the perfect gift, says Prendergast, as no one will ever own two pieces that are identical.
“They are also the perfect jewellery that customers will buy for themselves, because they are one of a kind and collectable. They are affordable works of art.”
The pieces can be sold with the addition of a sterling silver frame, which makes them more like a mini work of art, or without a frame for a more affordable, every day piece of jewellery.
“I go through and choose each pendant carefully, as though I were making the selection for myself,” says Prendergast.
“Not every piece that goes through the final firing process will be selected to be made into jewellery.”
