two melbourne designers have teamed up to find a new use for recycled tyre matting creating their label ruba design in the process.
interior designer sonia attard and award-winning designer lisa vincitorio have created a range of placemats, coasters, mousepads and desk sets. they are also making trivets to use up the cutoffs from placemats and coasters.
“we wanted to create something from a recycled product and not just design another placement – it was about designing something with substance behind it,” says vincitorio. “what would have been the point otherwise?”
“sonia, my business partner, came across this material whilst working as an interior designer. it is traditionally used as flooring for gyms, playgrounds and offices. the material, made from recycled tyres, has a tactile quality that we felt could be used in a different application. as well as the feel, the material is heat resistant, machine washable, suitable for use outdoor and durable.”
the products are not only eco-friendly but won’t lose their shape, are waterproof, heat resistant, dishwasher safe and non-slip.
“this material meant that the humble placemat could double as a trivet, as you can place a hot pan from the stove straight on to it. it also meant that you could place your placemat straight in the dishwasher, perfect for the busy individual who does not have time to be delicate and careful. and, unlike many of its competition, this placemat can easily be left outside to brave the elements,” she explains.
however, they are only available in black, but this is for a good reason as black tyres can not be dyed.
the recycled matting comes from regupol germany but products are manufactured in australia.
ruba design plans to have the products ready for the christmas spending season and will launch the collection at the melbourne design market in december.
“we currently have nine retailers representing us. they are an assortment of online stores and physical stores, all focusing on designer products and also with the environment in mind,” she adds.
