The Great Gatsby inspires Designer Rugs range
Consumers can get a taste of the interior décor style of the roaring 1920s as featured in Baz Luhrmann’s new film The Great Gatsby with the Catherine Martin Deco collection.
In partnership with Designer Rugs, the range is made up of five rugs designed by the Academy Award winner in the Art Deco style.
The rugs are hand knotted from Tibetan wool and pure silk and feature combinations of steel blue, amethyst, champagne, dark chocolate, topaz and tobacco colours.
“This collection is the confluence of the playfulness and romance of the French Art Deco styles that permeated my childhood and the forward-looking energy of American Art Deco that surrounds me in my second home of New York.” says Martin.
“I have been tremendously inspired by living in the Deco metropolis that is New York – a city that surrounds me with monuments that encapsulate the miracle of the modern age. I find it absolutely overwhelming and thrilling to see how 20th Century architects have looked to the future while still referencing the past with intense decoration, creating dynamic, sky-scraping forms. It is this characteristic exuberance that I have fallen in love with and looked to in designing these rugs.
“I’m very proud to have collaborated with Designer Rugs on my first hand knotted range. This new collection is meticulously hand-crafted using the finest natural yarns by Nepalese artisans whose skills have been passed on from generation to generation. These rugs hold the memories of something past in both their creation and manufacture but nevertheless look toward the future in their design spirit,” Martin adds.
The Great Gatsby opens/opened in Australia on May 30. It has received mixed reviews overseas but was a box office hit in the US. Australian actors Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire in the locally produced movie.
“For the last few years, we have been steeping ourselves in the world of The Great Gatsby and the incredible aesthetic explosion of the 1920s,” says Baz Luhrmann, director. “In her contemporary Deco rug collection, Martin has hit upon an exciting interpretation of both a fresh and classical aesthetic. Some of these pieces were a perfect fit for the world we were creating for The Great Gatsby.”
