Spindrift Collections turns ocean waste into jewellery
Founder of Spindrift Collections, Natasha Wakefield, has turned her passion for the ocean into a business by creating jewellery using beach glass.
Respect for the environment and a commitment to sustainability are central to Spindrift ethos, says Wakefield.
“I am always striving to refine my processes, designs and packaging in order to reduce our impact on the environment,” she explains.
“Working sustainably is a constantly evolving process for Spindrift Collections and as the business continues to grow, I am taking big steps forward to achieving my ultimate goal of a fully traceable and fair trade supply chain.”
As part of this philosophy, Wakefield makes a lot of her jewellery from beach glass—broken bottles that arrive in the ocean as rubbish and are slowly polished by the sand and salt into smooth gems.
“I adore breathing new life into each piece of glass, turning it into something special so the wearer can keep a piece of the ocean with them,” says Wakefield.
“I am honoured to work with the ocean to create my designs. The ocean supplies me with the most amazing recycled glass treasures, each with an untold story… a small tactile piece of sea-tumbled glass just waiting to be turned into something new.”
Spindrift currently offers four jewellery collections—beach, wanderlust, mountain and yoga—and Wakefield says she is inspired by the natural environment. “The Spindrift collections are inspired by our wild oceans, beautiful mountains and by a sense of wanderlust for places not yet explored,” she says.
“I also love to wander through Pinterest, Instagram, read amazing books and magazines and visit new places.”
Creativity and a sense of wanderlust are central to Spindrift’s pieces, and Wakefield says she hopes her jewellery sparks this within her customers.
“At Spindrift I want to inspire you to get outside into the great outdoors, swim in the ocean, hike into the mountains, or just switch off your mobile phone and be still.
“Spindrift is more than just a collection of jewellery and accessories; each piece is intended to spark a journey, embrace a memory and tell your story.”
Wakefield describes herself as an “eternal dreamer” and says she has lots of ideas for Spindrift in the future. Currently she is working on designing new collections for the Australian summer.
