Scientist opens gift store, makes $250K in first year during pandemic
It’s always nice to hear a success story during the Covid-19 pandemic, with The Curated Parcel (TCP) seeing a massive influx in online shopping, particularly for its educational range due to parents having to homeschool or finding items to entertain and keep their children engaged.
The Curated Parcel is a Melbourne home-based gift store, launched by Joanne Nelson just over a year ago when she decided she wanted to spend more time with her kids.
“We are a family who loves nothing more than being with each other,” she enthuses.
“After having my third child, I decided that I was missing out on too many milestones. I wanted to be with my family.”
Nelson was working as an IVF fertility specialist which gave her the experience and business skillset to start her own business.
“Combined with my natural knack of gifting it opened up a new journey in the form of TCP. Once TCP took shape, I was inspired to use my new platform to give back to society. In Australia, there are so many young people who are either homeless or struggling in education. Educating the next generation is so important and supporting those young people who may need just that little helping hand goes such a long way.”
All the products on offer are only sustainable items but most importantly providing educational aspects or for long lasting keepsake.
“What really stands out about TCP is our Play and Learn Boxes. They are not just any subscription boxes that are cookie cutter boxes, every box is curated and personalised to the child and their age, developmental stage and interest,” Nelson says.
“The Curated Parcel is exactly what it stands for. Every parcel is curated by me for the intended recipient and having something curated comes with heart and it is more than just a parcel, it is parcel with soul.”
For every order made, 10 per cent is donated to The Smith Family and to Kids Under Cover which prevents youth homelessness.
“There are so many ways to contribute to society and supporting our next generation so that they can take the lead for a better future is essential. This is where the pays it forward with the 10 per cent charity program that came into place. The business turned over just over $250,000 in its first year.”
Next month Nelson will be launching a books subscription and she has got expansion plans for her ranges for 2021.
“TCP isn’t just any online gift store, it has a soul of its own and that every item that is delivered to its new home brings joy and happiness. And from this, I am able to give back to the community in a different way, which is what sets me and TCP apart from others.
“I am exceptionally proud of what I have built in the short 14 months and that TCP deserves to be recognised. I am hard working and pour my heart and soul into everything that revolves around TCP.”
The Curated Parcel is a finalist in the AusMumpreneur Awards in the People’s Choice: Customer Service Award and Emerging AusMumpreneur Award.
