Product trends revealed ahead of Melbourne Toy fair
technology is no longer the top trend for toys according to creativity for kids brand manager allen davis, who forecasts back to basics products will be in vogue this year.
speaking ahead of the toy, hobby and nursery fair in melbourne, davis – who is also a toy trend specialist with 20 years industry experience – predicts consumers will seek out activities which promote creativity and social interaction.
“the standout trends that have emerged in toys and creative play this year reflect the radical shift towards craft activities and ‘back to basics’ style toys that encourage family bonding,” allen says.
“this year, the three major trends that have emerged in creative play are creativity, team play and learning, with an overall focus on quality and value for play.
“previous years saw a strong focus on technology but 2012 will see a ‘back to basics’ approach where learning and development is celebrated with children’s hands full of glue, not a controller.
“parents are looking for toys that inspire a child’s natural curiosity and creativity through various forms of imaginative, educational and social activities as well as activities through which they can bond with their child.”
faber-castell’s creativity for kids brand is known for products which offer the chance to be creative and use the imagination such as e-z spray tie dye and new product fashion bracelets.
“open-ended craft activities allow children to design and make their own creations, inspiring creativity and helping children to develop skills and coordination at a level that can only be achieved through ‘hands on’ creative play,” he adds.
