Gatsby, gold and glamour on trend at Reed Gift Fairs Melbourne
Baz Luhrmann’s box office hit version of F. Scott Ftizgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby appears to have influenced homewares and furniture going by the products to be released at Reed Gift Fairs Melbourne from August 3 to 7.
Held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and Melbourne Showgrounds, the event showcases product and décor trends for the next season.
Style Counsel’s Alison Triffett says the Gatsby style can be seen in various product categories.
“All things vintage and flapper-style fashions are already featuring strongly on the catwalks,” she says. “This theme is also coming through in decadent statement, jewellery, head pieces and gift-ware like elegant jewellery boxes in high-shine lacquers or mirrored finishes. The emphasis is on opulence and decadence all the way.”
She also highlights statement furnishings with extreme textures and detailing, tapestries, products with a word or phrase and onesies as other trends emerging from the trade fair.
“Once upon a time the only onesies available were the Bonds towelling grow-suits for newborns but now everyone is getting in on the fun. A big trend we’re seeing is adult onesies. Onesies-themed parties – especially for university students – are really trending this winter for grabbing attention while staying warm and comfortable way into the night,” she explains.
Gold and bright shades of blue such as turquoise are trending colours for the upcoming season according to Triffett who adds that neon shades are still popular.
“The influence of internet and social media sites has resulted in an even speedier turn-around from production to supply. Fashion fads are trending faster than ever before, and therefore the consumer expects to be able to access these latest looks and products just as quickly.
“Gift fairs are a great way for retailers to see, touch and feel these latest products and get them into store while they’re in high demand by the fashion-savvy consumer.”
