FLYYPOD creates a buzz in Chicago with sleep pod
A contemporary travel goods brand inspired by a profound appreciation for the world at large, FLYYPOD features the world’s first sustainably produced sleep pod designed specifically for air travel.
Showcased at the Inspired Home Show for the first time, founder Andrew Schofield developed the sleep pod in 2018 in Melbourne, inspired by the long-haul travel from Australia to most places in the world.
“When you’re traveling internationally the plane is always cold and for those flying in economy, the golden age of travel has long gone,” he explains.
“Plane seats are narrower, leg room is tight and pillows have disappeared from most carriers. While some airlines still provide blankets, they’re only washed at the point of origin meaning those making the return journey are using blankets that have simply been repackaged.
“Given there are upwards of one million people in the air at any one time imagine how many passengers may have used each one before it’s washed. Likewise, their impact on the environment is alarming. As and when they’re finally laundered, the polyester microfibres enter our waterways adding further damage to our already polluted oceans.
“At FLYYPOD we strive to create products in a responsible fashion so as to minimise our carbon footprint. From utilising recycled materials to selecting compostable packaging for shipping, we partner with ethically minded suppliers and we are committed to maintaining an eco-friendly ethos for the betterment of both our customers and the planet,” he adds.
Undoubtedly the star of the collection, the FLYYPOD sleep pod holds broad appeal especially for consumers eager to maintain a certain standard of travel. Beyond providing comfort in the air, however, it’s also proven to be the must-have accessory in the event of flight delays and cancellations.
“The holiday season saw thousands left stranded at airports due to a pilot shortage, weather delays and the sheer volume of travellers. With budgets tight and hotel rooms few and far between, FLYYPOD customers were prepared with a portable sleeping bag which allowed them to bunk down in their own personal space. In addition, they were able to place valuables inside the pod so that they were safe while they slept.”
The sleep pod can be worn easily and comfortably as a hands-free, crossbody bag using an adjustable shoulder strap. Other items in the range include a sleep mask, an add-a-bag belt, aromatic sanitiser, transit blanket and a laundry bag.
