Film animator and wife team up to launch children’s wear brand
Disney and Lucasfilm animator Adam Murphy and wife Demelza Haines, who has a background in theatre, have teamed up to launch Welly’s Wonders – a baby and children’s wear label focusing on timeless storybook style characters.
The products are made in Australia from organic cotton. They include rompers, shirts, greeting cards and artwork.
“I think what sets us apart from other ranges is Adam’s artwork,” says Haines. “His background as a lead artist and animator for film studios such as Disney and Lucasfilm means that he can create gorgeous characters and give them such personality and life. Each character has their own little story and we’re working on our first children’s book to come out hopefully later this year.
“Also, our style of illustration is completely timeless. It’s something that anyone of any age can relate to and could make someone feel very nostalgic with their own childhood memories.”
For Murphy, Welly’s Wonders gives him the opportunity to have creative freedom over his art work.
“Working in film has huge time pressures and you may be working on something that is already very well mapped out in look, feel and design,” he says. “Working on Welly’s Wonders products means I have the luxury of time to create something completely from my own imagination and something I’d love to see my own kids in.”
Welly’s Wonders will add an online store to its website later this month. The website shows each of the brand’s characters and their stories. It has been designed in an Edwardian vaudeville style.
The brand has been overwhelmed by the response to its products since its soft launch late last year. The quality of design and feel of the products have stood out in customer feedback.
There are plans for more products to be added such as a tote bag and new designs for Christmas.
