a lunar eclipse in sydney late last year has provided a jewellery company with the inspiration for its latest collection.
bilingual design has used the natural phenomena to create three designs which translate into earrings, rings and bracelets.
operations manager salvatore tambasco says he and designer marta niegowska decided to use an eclipse because they like to link the pieces customers wear with something meaningful from their personal lives.
“it was more about the shapes, colours and shadows,” he says. “hence with the eclipse pieces they have a light and a dark shadow.
“all the individual pieces themselves have a focus on the symbolism of different components of an eclipse. the first piece ratio relates to [the way] planets go in and out of lunar eclipses and the relationship between the planets. the next piece shadows looks at the shadows that form pre- and post-lunar eclipse and the third piece orbit focuses on the orbit pre and post and what it looks like when it [transitions] into pre- and post-eclipse.”
the pair got heavily involved in researching the eclipse range looking at the phenomena from a theoretical and customer perspective.
“we also did production research ourselves. whenever we create a collection we actually road test the pieces and do some testing on our concepts purely to make every piece feel ergonomic. we always try to design in a classic timeless feel so we did quite a bit of production testing and researching on eclipses themselves, both solar and lunar,” he says.
made of sterling silver, the range is oxidised to give it the shadow effect of an eclipse. the product has proved to be a big hit with customers.
“in terms of sales it’s been pretty positive [and] it’s growing. we’re travelling around australia doing design markets. that’s one of our core principles; we like to interact with people.
“we did design made trade in melbourne recently and the feedback was positive, customers were just amazed that they could wear something as a bracelet but that’s also a ring, so yeah it was catching a lot of attention,” adds tambasco.
