Aussie entrepreneur launches unique Chilly Towel
After being diagnosed with cancer and experiencing constant overheating during chemotherapy, Tara Lock set out to create a product that would help other people in her position.
She came up with the Chilly Towel, a unique towel that becomes cooler than ambient air when wet. This means the towel maintains a temperature that feels cool to the skin.
While the towel’s hyper-evaporative fibres retain water, providing cooling relief, the towel itself stays touch dry.
“One of the main symptoms throughout my illness was constantly overheating, hot flushes and night sweats,” says Lock.
“While I am extremely pleased to say I have fought my cancer battle and won, I still experience this ongoing side effect from the chemotherapy… I use the Chilly Towel to assist with my overheating on a daily basis.”
Lock tested more than 30 different cooling fabrics while creating the product, before bringing the towel to market in 2015. It has since found a wide audience, helping everyone from chemotherapy patients to women going through menopause, gym junkies and even chefs who want to keep cool in the kitchen.
It is currently stocked in pharmacies across Australia but Lock says she wants to expand into other kinds of stores.
“Being diagnosed with and beating cancer has given me strength to strive for something positive in my life. My dream is to share this fantastic, affordable quality product that can assist so many people who are going through similar experiences.”
The Chilly Towel is reusable, machine washable and available in pink, blue and green. For every pink towel sold, Chilly Towel donates $2 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
