Royal Selangor taps into niche market with new collections
Retailers looking for something a little bit different wouldn’t have missed Royal Selangor at the recent Melbourne Gift Fair.
Managing director Andrew McLean says it was great to be back after a three-year break and to reconnect with clients, seeing them face to face again.
“But at the same time it has been tremendous to see so many new accounts as well, so we’ve had great results from exhibiting,” he says.
“You want to see existing clients but also pick up new ones, so it has been a good result.”
The company has such a wide assortment of collections, there was something for pretty much everyone that walked onto the stand.
“There is a niche market for different themes we can certainly tap into,” he explains.
Indeed, about 30 per cent of new clients Royal Selangor picked up at the fair were new types of businesses that have some specialties and so they are honing in on some specific product type as supposed to buying a little bit of everything from different collections.
“For example, a retailer that focuses on some sort of medieval type look and feel in a store, we can cater for that with our wine accessories and pop culture collectibles through some of the pieces from the British museum.”
New collections launched at the gift fair include the Ace range, inspired by a cards game and includes a decanter, whisky glasses and coasters.
“It is beautifully designed and a bit of fun, but also great for men’s gifting for occasions such as Father’s Day and Christmas.
“We also introduced a drinkware collection inspired by tools, hence the name toolbar. A great little cocktail collection that comes in its own case, so it looks like a tool caddy that you carry around, as well as some new beautiful stemware.”
And for those that couldn’t make it to the fair, McLean would do live viewings so they could still see the new products ‘up close’.
“We’ve been doing a lot of video calls with our clients that couldn’t make it to the fair. That’s the way we operated through the pandemic and we basically continued that new way of dealing with our customers from interstate. It’s the new normal and we’ve had quite a few live viewings during the show.”
