Cubs & Co is a Sydney-born brand bringing cool yet functional styles of headwear (snapback caps, bucket hats, sun visors and beanies) for babies and adults, making them the perfect matching accessory.
Launched in June 2020 by Mandi Binder, she began working on her new venture while on maternity leave with her second child.
“We are based in Coogee Beach, a cosy coastal suburb that defines sun, sand and family,” she says.
“My inspiration in starting Cubs & Co were my two very active young boys. I always struggled finding them good quality hats to protect them against the sun, while also fitting their heads properly and looking cool, which is as important to them as it is to me.
“My husband loves matching all his outfits with the kids, so that’s where the idea came from. Seeing my whole family in twinning styles pulls at the heartstrings; my little gang, my team, my home.”
Specialising in matching headwear for the whole family, Binder spent the first year of her maternity leave designing, getting samples, making sure the quality was great, and then made her debut with kids snapback hats.
“Since then, it has done really well. We have been expanding the range while also moving into wholesale as well as selling straight to consumers.”
Indeed, the collection was very popular at Reed Gift Fairs Sydney with buyers from pharmacies, gift stores, baby stores and surf shops as well as online stores.
With a background in marketing and advertising but no experience in design, Binder started with creating products she personally liked.
“In the beginning it’s very daunting, but I’ve been around for about 18 months and I can now see what my customers like and don’t like, and what’s more popular. It’s certainly a learning curve trying to stay ahead of the trends.”
Since making its debut in the market, Cubs & Co has branched out into beanies, kids sunglasses and bucket hats, and Binder is excited about some upcoming launches later this year and into 2023.
“We’ve got a few exciting things in the pipeline for next winter with new hat styles including matching kids and adults fedora hats,” she enthuses.
“We will also be launching nylon quick-dry hats later this year. It’s a brand-new style and perfect for the beach.”
