Handmade homewares that care for people and the planet
Being good to the planet doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style, at least that’s what the team behind One Another Design believes.
Since launching six years ago, One Another Design has partnered with talented artisans living in developing countries to create unique handmade products that are not only designed to look good―but are ‘designed for good’.
“Everybody loves a new cushion but we make sure you don’t have to compromise your eco, ethical and sustainable values for design and style,” say co-owners, Rick and Annette Carter.
“Through safe, stable employment with fair pay we are helping empower women artisans to rise above poverty and dream new dreams for themselves and their families.
“We have also been taking steps to increase our sustainability so that we are not just caring for people but the planet too.”
The seed for One Another Design was planted during the couple’s trip to India where they had been travelling with not-for-profit Opportunity International. After seeing the harsh realities of living in poverty they decided to do something tangible to help make a difference.
“So we embraced the entrepreneurial spirit of the women we met in India and launched our own ethical homewares brand.
“With our backgrounds in graphic design, photography and fashion, we knew we wanted to combine our love of design with the traditional techniques of the women to create unique handmade products,” they add.
This season the new fabrics are all hand loomed from certified organic cotton and use natural dyes―the Olive Green khadi is sourced from an Indigenous Indian crop that is rain fed.
The new Belted cushions look like leather but are in fact an innovative natural textile made from sustainably-sourced pineapple leaf fibre.
The new outdoor cushions are created from discarded plastic bags that are collected, cleaned, cut into strips and then woven. Plus One Another continues to use Eco Inserts which are made from 100 per cent post-consumer water bottles.
“We want our customers to not only love the unique handmade qualities of our cushions but we want them to know the artisan who made it―which is why our textiles all have a label that is hand-signed by the woman who made it, because we believe that ‘behind every product is a person’.”
