Young talent championed at Giftionery Taipei
The talent of young Taiwanese designers was on show at Giftionery Taipei recently through a new concept, TWDW Select, curated by the Taiwan Designers’ Web.
TWDW Select was based on the idea of a pop up shop, and featured products from 14 local brands that the Designers’ Web wanted to showcase to Taiwanese and international visitors. It was the first time that the Designers’ Web has participated in the trade show, which runs over four days and covers gift, stationery, souvenirs and homewares.
Founded 10 years ago, the Designers’ Web champions young designers through events including Taiwan Designers’ Week, hoping to create a platform to showcase local design to the world.
“This is our first attempt to organise something different and we hope to bring more international focus and business opportunities,” says Rita Tsui, Taiwan Designers’ Web project manager.
“We want to promote young talent and emerging Taiwanese designers. The products reflect our local culture, an environmental awareness and the exploration of different materials.”
Some of the environmentally conscious products on display included accessories made from marble waste by Blacktail; wallets by Moxor that are made using leather from old scooter and motorcycle seats; and cork items from Sowood.
UTP, or Untitled Project, showcased its ceramic products that combine local crafts with modern design. The brand traces traditional folk culture back through the years and gives it a modern take, reimagining traditional patterns through modern design techniques.
“They found some old artworks and added a modern twist,” adds Tsui.
