To celebrate her business turning two, Queensland-based designer and artist Yenny Stromgren has released the first item in a line of boutique homewares for her brand, Dirt by Earth.
Originally from Sweden, Stromgren began Dirt by Earth with the vision of making wooden jewellery using a laser engraver.
“My first idea was to create wearable art that people could wear as a ‘walking exhibition’,” says Stromgren. “But with time the focus has shifted to homewares and furniture that represent quality, sustainability, simplicity and Scandinavian style.”
The first piece in the Dirt by Earth homewares range is the Moroccan, a large wooden storage box inspired by the natural beauty of Australia combined with Scandinavian quality crafting. It has been digitally screen printed and cut to shape by local craftsmen in Noosa.
“This piece is close to my heart,” says Stromgren. “It has let me capture the essence of my homeland – simplicity, beauty and practicality. In a home, it catches the eye and makes a wonderful conversation piece.
“My vision has always been to make earthy Scandinavian-inspired products in wood that last a lifetime. I grew up in a little village in Sweden close to a pine forest, and have vivid memories of building cubby houses of birch and pine, so I have always loved wood.
“By buying our products you also take a little bit of my Swedish heritage home with you.”
Dirt by Earth also stocks a range of smaller products including pendants, seasonal decorations, fridge magnets and trinket boxes which are designed and made by Stromgren in her studio in the Noosa hinterlands. More furniture items will be available in 2015.
