Ziga Rugs celebrates showroom opening with exclusive rug collection
sydney-based company ziga rugs has marked the unveiling of its first showroom in waterloo, new south wales with an exclusive collection of rugs designed in collaboration with thomas waterman design.
ziga rugs was founded by first generation tibetan born in exile in nepal, tseten tsatultsang, who has been living in sydney for the past four years. his grandparents were among thousands who were forced to flee tibet in the 1950s because of chinese occupation.
his company works with genuine handmade tibetan rugs made in nepal – an art witnessed by the red cross and nepalese government in refugee camps.
the debut collection is made from the finest wool, silk and natural plant fibres such as hemp and cactus.
“this bespoke collection is a fusion of traditional manufacturing methods with contemporary designs and brings together the best of both worlds in visual design and exceptional quality,” he says. “we provide elegant pieces to complement modern interiors that can be personalised to suit the project in size, colour and fibre.
“each of our rugs undergoes a lengthy construction process and involves detailed inspection at every stage to ensure that our rugs meet very high standards.”
thomas waterman was chosen for the design collaboration because he understood the nature of fine hand woven rugs and what ziga rugs was trying to achieve.
“his ideas on interior design and colours had a soft elegance about them, that fit in perfectly with ziga rugs. i felt he understood the vision behind the kind of rugs we wanted to make. so when we decided to work with a local sydney-based designer to in creating our exclusive rug collection, the decision was easy. we couldn’t be happier with the results,” he adds.
ziga rugs is australia’s first company to specialise exclusively in tibetan rugs from nepal.
